About the Item
A very charming antique Victorian rose and yellow gold mourning locket. This beautiful oval locket features an engraved front and back. The front is decorated with black enamel around the center panel and engraved with the words “IN MEMORY OF”. The yellow gold central part of the front panel features a Scottish thistle in a black and white cameo. The engraved back panel has a blank paper scroll in the center. There is no glass plate on the inside of either panel.
The thistle has been an important symbol of Scottish heraldry for over 500 years. It also represents one of the highest honours the country can give an individual. Founded by James VII and II in 1687, the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry which is bestowed to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of Scotland and the greater United Kingdom.
Collect your own charms and lockets as wearable memories, it has a symbolic and often a sentimental value. This detailed genuine 9 karat yellow and rose gold mourning locket is in good condition and dates from the nineteenth century, circa 1880's.
