About the Item
An antique early Victorian 9ct gold seal fob pendant, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. This stunning piece features classic scrolling arches leading to an integral bail, which is attached to a 14 karat gold split ring. The split ring is beautifully adorned with deeply carved floral and foliate patterns, adding to its decorative appeal. At the base of the fob is a hand-carved white chalcedony seal, depicting an elegant intaglio of a seated fox, a symbol often associated with cunning and intelligence.
Fobs like this one were traditionally worn by wealthy Georgian and Victorian gentlemen. These fobs were typically attached to pocket watch chains, which were fastened to the vest pocket. Seal fobs, such as this, became popular pendants on these chains. They were used not only for decoration but also for stamping wax seals. Most seal fobs were made of durable materials like metal or gold over metal to withstand the repeated pressure of stamping.
This fob and split ring are in excellent condition and of high quality. It measures 3.9 centimeters in height, 1.8 centimeters in length, and 1.7 centimeters in width, with the chased ring having a diameter of 1.8 centimeters. The total weight of the fob and split ring is 9.31 grams. There are no hallmarks present, and the pendant is sold without a chain.
