About the Item
Contrasts of smooth and frilly engraving make an unusual shield design on this Victorian Silver Locket c. 1860-1880. The shield shape at top is covered with abstract vines atop a larger shield of raised silver graduated orbs, bordered by silver twisted wire and tiny silver granulated balls. Below is the contrasting, shining, plain area showing an eye catching mixture of texture. See the photograph on the model for reference. The locket bale is original. The condition is excellent and any mark seen in the photograph is a reflection of light on silver. In whole, the pendant is a delight. It can be worn on a silver choker or chain at your chosen length. Two photographs can be inserted inside.
In the Victorian Era at this time in particular silver was very much in demand once Queen Victoria gave a gift of a silver necklace to Jenny Lind, the British Nightingale. Birmingham was a major producer of silver jewelry during this expanded demand. I buy only the pieces with the most unusual designs.
