About the Item
An antique Victorian 14 karat yellow gold cross pendant created with turquoise cabochon stones. This lovely antique cross is beautifully decorated with an array of blue-green turquoise cabochons across the front. The turquoise cabochon stones are dome shaped and set throughout the cross. This handmade cross is solid and has a yellow gold tone, the gold frame is highly polished on both sides. The pendant dates from the late Victorian era, circa 1880.
Queen Victoria’s love of turquoise was no secret. In the early and mid-nineteenth century turquoise became very popular in European jewelry. Queen Victoria adored this attractive blue gemstone and encouraged its use in Victorian jewelry. It became symbolic of true love. Turquoise enjoyed a resurgence in the late Victorian era and was set in rings, brooches, and earrings but in larger sizes than in earlier periods.
The pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. The cross measures ca. 5.8 centimeters in length and 3.5 centimeters wide. The cross pendant weighs 22 grams.
