About the Item
An extraordinary example of Art Nouveau artistry and symbolism, this rare pendant (circa 1900) is a masterwork of both craft and sentiment. Sculpted as a double-sided reuleaux triangle, the Portugese jewel features exquisitely detailed reverse-carved rock crystal, depicting cherubs exchanging hearts on one side and a cherub holding a flaming heart on the other side.
Framing the crystal is luminous green plique-à-jour enamel, its translucent cells evoking stained glass windows—a hallmark of the finest Art Nouveau craftsmanship. The piece is mounted in solid 19.2 ct gold, professionally verified through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and traditional jeweler’s acid testing to confirm purity and authenticity.
Adding poetic depth, two French inscriptions grace the pendant:
"L’un pour l’autre" – One for the other
"Brûler et se taire" – Burn and be silent
These mottos express a restrained but profound devotion, underscoring the romantic mystique of the era.
The pendant measures approximately 1.6 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 1.25 inches wide, with a substantial weight of 22.2 grams. It remains in excellent antique condition, the enamel beautifully intact and the carving crisp and luminous from both sides.
