About the Item
Eytan Brandes was born and raised in Israel, and when he was growing up, public telephones used tokens (called asimons) instead of coins. He has had a bunch of these tokens lying around the shop and always liked the mid-1960's issue best for its strong graphics, showing an old-style telephone dial on one side and a gazelle on the other. He's wanted to make asimon pendants for years and here, finally, is his first one, mounted in a polished 14 karat gold frame he designed specifically for these tokens.
The asimon shown here was issued in 1966. The gazelle side has the year 5726 (1966) on top and the word "telephone" in Hebrew and Arabic below the hole. The dial side says "Israel Postal Company."
The rigid steel cable wire choker is perfect with this pendant, and Eytan elevated it by adding a gorgeous 14K gold lobster clasp, harvested from an old bracelet several years ago. This round lobster has a cool Machine Age look that complements the coin. Note that the pendant can be removed from the chain for mixing and matching...

Marks: The frame is not marked or signed but we guarantee it to be 14K gold. The lobster clasp is stamped "14K." By sheer coincidence, the clasp is also from Israel, as indicated by the lyre-shaped mark on the side (too small and light to show clearly in a photo).
Weights: The lobster clasp and the connecting rings, all 14k gold, weigh 1.5 grams. The pendant frame and jump ring weigh 1.7 grams. The total gold weight is therefore 3.2 grams. The total necklace weight is 15.9 grams.

Eytan Brandes cast one of his old silver coins in 22 karat gold. It shows a beardless youth, possibly an early emperor (most of them wore beards after 117AD), as suggested by the diadem tied at the back of his neck.
No clue about the image on the back. With the lettering oriented north (and upside down), you can maybe see the neck of a horned animal, but that might just be us seeing things in a Rorschach test.
To frame this little homage to ancient commerce, Eytan crafted a platinum frame with four prongs on each side.
The pyrite chain, which we made specifically for this pendant, has a 14 karat white gold lobster closure.*

Four different components came together to make this sexy 14 karat yellow gold chain.
The curb chain itself is standard jeweler's inventory that's been kicking around the store for a few years. Eytan Brandes removed the lobster clasp and added the toggle, which is newly cast from an antique silver toggle.
For the end ring, he pried one of the rings off of a boring brooch -- one of those pins where a cluster of rings makes a kind of wreath.
The ring looks great -- it's thick and has squared edges -- but it's hollow and too lightweight to stand up to the solid toggle. (Strangulation alert!)
Rather than lose the ring, Eytan decided to add some weight. The tassel -- from his mysterious pile of 1950's gold tassels acquired several years ago -- is his happy solution. It moves freely from a large matching bale and is the perfect finishing touch!
