This is an absolutely stunning museum quality antique Victorian Shell Cameo Pendant or Brooch in 18 Karat Gold with a hand carved image of a Goddess Maiden scattering roses with two attendant Cherub, Angel or Putti in the sky. The cameo depicts the Goddess Maiden Aurora.
According to Roman mythology, the sunrise is announced by Aurora, the goddess of the dawn. In this exquisite hand carved cameo pendant or brooch, she is masterfully carved from shell and is depicted dropping roses, a representation of the phrase 'rosy-fingered dawn' that describes the early morning and is found in Homer's The Odyssey. Aurora is accompanied by two winged angel, cherub, cupid or putti. The exquisite carving, based on renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's famous bas-relief, 'Day,' is set in an ornate scrollwork frame of 18 Karat Yellow Gold. The cameo pendant is a lovely way to consider the light of day.
The cameo is set in a gorgeous detailed setting in 18 Karat Yellow Gold. It has a bale to be worn as a necklace as well as a pin stem to be worn as a brooch if desired.
The cameo is of extraordinary beauty and the imagery is very rare. The dramatic pendant is 2 1/8 inches tall. The image of the goddess in her stunning diaphanous see through robes, scattering roses and attended to by the two angels, putti or cherubs is an absolute masterwork of cameo carving. The very fine quality of the cameo is reflected in the artisan setting the cameo in the exquisite 18 Karat Gold setting with the wonderful gold adornments surrounding the cameo. The cameo is very deeply carved. The image of the Goddess Maiden has extremely fine details in her face, and her body. The cherubs are masterworks of cameo carving. The delicate rose garlands cascade around the goddess. The magnificent pendant is a masterpiece of cameo artistry and the work of one of the finest cameo artists.
Cameo jewels are all the rage today and this is one of the most extraordinary carved gems we have seen.
The pendant/brooch is 2 1/8 inches (54mm) tall and is 1 3/4 inches (43mm) wide.
The cameo itself is 45mm tall by 35mm wide.
The pendant tests for 14-18 Karat Yellow Gold. The pin stem is gilt metal.
The pendant weighs 14.1 grams.
