This is a stunning and very rare antique Art Deco - Victorian - Belle Epoque Cameo Pendant or Brooch of a magnificent hand carved face of Bacchus, also known as Dionysus, with a Butterfly on the shoulder and set in 14 Karat Gold. The face of Bacchus or Dionysus is a masterpiece of artistic expression - the face is carved with exquisite detail throughout, the hair is stunning and the grape and leaf clusters in his hair are wonderful! The cameo is so very special with the Butterfly on the shoulder of Bacchus. This is a very rare image on a cameo and adds to the wonderful celebratory nature of Bacchus. The cameo is carved in shell. The cameo is a wonderful large size. The piece has a folding bale to wear as either a pendant necklace or as a brooch. When worn as a brooch the bale folds down to become invisible.
Bacchus or Dionysus is the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre in ancient Greek religion and myth.
The pendant is 2 inches (52mm) tall including the bale. Without the bale the pendant is 1 3/4 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches (38mm) wide.
