About the Item
A handmade carved agate and 18-karat gold pendant necklace by Bent Gabrielsen, Denmark circa 1975. Back of pendant stamped: makers mark, B. Gabrielsen P., Denmark, U 193, 750. Toggle stamped: BGP 750 DENMARK.
Gabrielsen most often worked in silver; this is one of his more unusual 18-karat gold jewels.
A deep appreciation for nature characterizes Bent Gabrielsen's artistic approach, and this handmade pendant and chain is no exception. It is a testament to his ability to transform simple raw materials into wearable mini-masterpieces. The pendant showcases a meticulously carved brown agate gemstone on a gold chain, revealing nature’s intricate patterns and deep range of hues. The rich, warm-toned 18-karat yellow gold setting complements the agate's deep colors.
Bent Gabrielsen remains a famed Danish jewelry designer. Born in 1928, he graduated in 1953 from one of the earliest classes of the Goldsmith’s Academy. When working for the prominent firm of Hans Hansen Solvsmedie, he became responsible for its entire production. In 1969 he left to set up an independent company, "Gabrielsen's Guldsmedie", with his wife and himself as the only employees.
A jewelry designer of exceptional creativity and skill, Gabrielsen won the Lunning Prize in 1964. Gabrielsen worked mainly with silver but also used gold, ebony, and enamel. His forms were clean and simple and he favored elliptical shapes. Erik Bohr, Chairman of the Lunning Committee, wrote, "Bent Gabrielsen's jewelry carries absolute conviction as to its function; his handling of materials is so restrained and well-considered that one feels this could hardly be otherwise...
