About the Item
This ridiculously large smoky quartz came into the shop inside of a customer's very heavy, poorly conceived 1970's gold pendant. The customer wanted the gold value of the pendant applied to her custom piece and she didn't want the quartz stone. Eytan decided it would make a cool fob, and he was right!
Set in a simple round basket with four prongs -- cast in 14 karat gold and designed by Eytan specifically for this honker stone -- our new pendant has a detachable enhancer bale that can fit over a chain bold and hearty enough to stand up to "Big Smoky."
We love the way this pendant looks with pearls so we made a 22" strand of 6mm Akoya (Japanese saltwater) pearls finished with a 14 karat gold ball clasp. These pearls are very clean with good luster. Rather than knotting them, they're separated with faceted rondelles of brown, red and yellow zircon* that plays nicely with the deep coffee brown of the pendant, but which also makes for a versatile piece that can be worn solo or layered, with or without the fob. The center of the necklace is strung with two consecutive zircons so that the pendant nestles perfectly between pearls.

*If you're not familiar with zircon, it's an earth-mined stone that rivals diamond for brilliance. It also naturally occurs in a range of gorgeous colors. It is NOT the same as -- or related to -- cubic zirconium, which is a man-made stone. Here in our shop, we're big fans of zircon, and we really, really wish the CZ folks had come up with a different name for their crappy diamond simulant!
