About the Item
This striking sterling silver and resin necklace, a true work of wearable art, was crafted by Finland's most famous jewelry artist ,Björn Weckström, for Lapponia in 1988. Handmade and part of a limited production, the piece showcases Weckström’s innovative use of materials. In the early 1970s, he experimented with acrylic and silver, embracing the air bubbles that formed during production to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs with added color pigments and gold grids.
This particular necklace, inspired by a “space Viking” motif, features a small silver and resin Viking atop a half-moon-shaped resin element in clear, green, and blue hues, complete with air bubbles. The chain is composed of silver and resin bars linked by spheres, giving it an ethereal, otherworldly feel. The silver has a finely textured finish, and the piece is signed with Finnish hallmarks: Helsinki, L8, 925, and Lapponia.
This necklace, which weighs 79 grams and measures 17” in length, is an exceptional example of Weckström’s pioneering artistry. It is in excellent condition, comfortable, and easy to wear.
Born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1935, Björn Weckström is a pivotal figure in modern Nordic jewelry. A Finnish sculptor and jeweler, he studied at the Finnish Goldsmith School in the 1950s, shaping his artistic foundation. Weckström’s designs, spanning nature abstractions to clean classical forms, gained instant recognition at the seminal International Exhibition of Modern Jewelry in London in 1961. This exhibition laid the groundwork for the emergence of modern jewelry across Europe.
Over his long career, Weckström has been closely associated with the Finnish jewelry firm Lapponia, and he is celebrated for pioneering combinations like silver and acrylic. Inspired by nature, snowfalls, the sea, and mythologies, his work, featuring gold, bronze, silver, and acrylic, showcases geometric forms, textured surfaces, and irregular shapes. Notable appearances include Yoko Ono wearing his ring on the Dick Cavett Show and Carrie Fisher wearing his Planetoid Valleys necklace, and Darina’s Bracelet in her role as Princess Leia in Star Wars (1977). Weckström’s jewelry graces the collection of Helsinki's Designmuseo and various esteemed public and private collections.
