About the Item
Black opals from the Lightning Ridge mines in Australia are the rarest and most valuable opals on earth. And Lightning Ridge black opals that display a vivid red flash are the most valuable opals of all.
This pendant is a perfect example of why these rare, precious opals are so coveted. With a superb cut and gleaming high polish, this solid (not a double or a triplet) Australian black opal from the Lightning Ridge mines has an organic, loosely triangular form and weighs approximately 2.42 carats. The gem flashes brilliant, vivid red, yellow, turquoise, purple and cobalt blue. The natural beauty of the stone has been maximized to its most magnificent potential by a skilled lapidary artist. Set within a custom 18k yellow gold frame -that exposes the rear of the opal, so that you can see with your own eyes that this is a solid black opal- and featuring a bail set with a .03ct VS brilliant round diamond. A 20" .4mm solid 18K Italian gold chain is included. The overall dimensions are 22mm tall by 10mm at the widest point, with a depth of 3.81mm.
While this may not be an enormous gem, most of the finest ones never are. And its brilliance, intoxicating vivid color and polished gleam draw the eye from across the room.
A truly rare and stunning pendant. The last two images were taken with the opal resting against my wrist, in the dimmest, softest natural light. Low light, not direct sunlight, is truest test of a black opal's beauty. And as you can see, this black opal just leaks color into the darkness.
