About the Item
This one-of-a-kind necklace features a near-round 13mm Tahitian pearl in an unusual brown shade. Topping it off is a vintage 14 karat gold stickpin set with a light blue sapphire. The chain continues the brown and blue color scheme with dark blue iolite in the center and smoky brown quartz at the ends.
The Pearl: Among the many gorgeous and interesting colors produced by the black lip oysters of Tahiti, brown is one of the more unusual, and it's particularly beautiful here, with pink and green overtones. We got this pearl from George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls, with offices in Los Angeles and Japan. Mr. Hajjar deals only with saltwater pearls -- akoya, South Sea and Tahitian -- and he buys directly from the pearl farms, so we always know we're getting the real thing. This pearl is 13mm and shows some divots, but they're not discolored, so difficult to see without a close inspection, and most of the divots faces to the back. The skin is beautifully mottled, attesting to its thick nacre.
The Stickpin: The stickpin is 14 karat gold and features concentric squares with a sapphire set in the middle. Assuming the sapphire is the original stone, we think the stickpin probably dates from the 1950's or possibly a little later. While the style is very Art Deco, the sapphire is too small to be so well-cut for that era. The sapphire -- probably no more than 0.05 carats -- is nice, though included, with light (but not pale) blue color and a well-executed, high-table cut. The width of the stickpin (corner to corner) is 15.3mm.
The Chain: The pendant is fixed on a 17" necklace of sparkling, faceted 4mm gemstone beads -- dark blue iolite rondelles in the middle and light brown, transparent smoky quartz beads on the ends. Strung on blue silk with a 14 karat gold pearl clasp. Note that the pendant is fixed on the chain (i.e., you can't remove the pendant without spilling a whole lotta beads on your floor).*
The pearl weighs 3.04 grams (0.81 momme). The necklace (pendant and beaded chain) weighs 13.5 grams.
