About the Item
An authentic Byzantine gold coin—Histamenon (1068-1071 AD)—is set in this beautiful 18kt Gold pendant. On the front, Christ crowns Emperor Romanus IV and Eudocia. We can see Michael VII, Constantius, and Andronicus on the rear.
Front Design:
The coin's front side features a solemn and sacred depiction of Christ crowning Romanus IV Diogenes and Empress Eudocia Makrembolitissa. Romanus IV was co-emperor with Michael VII for a brief period, and this imagery signifies the divine approval of their rule, a common theme in Byzantine iconography to legitimize and sanctify imperial power.
Rear Design:
The rear of the coin showcases the busts of Emperor Michael VII and his brothers, Constantius and Andronicus. Michael VII, also known as Michael Doukas, was a Byzantine Emperor known for his scholarly pursuits and tumultuous reign marked by military and economic challenges. The intricate details of their likenesses provide a window into the artistry and symbolism of the Byzantine period.
Historical Context:
The Histamenon was a gold coin introduced by Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas in the 10th century, and it became a standard currency in the Byzantine Empire. By the time of Michael VII's reign, these coins were not only a medium of exchange but also a means of propagating imperial imagery and religious authority.
