About the Item
This exquisite Qing Dynasty period pi disk was carved by hand prior to 1900. The pi disk is simply carved, undecorated, and beautifully proportioned. The earliest Neolithic bi disks were simply carved and without ornamentation or decoration, exactly like the disk, you see here. However, it was popular in the Qing Dynasty to pay homage to earlier neolithic pieces, so lack of decoration does not alone mean the piece is thousands of years old.
The polish is old -how old I cannot say for sure. My best guess for the creation of this piece is between 1820-1850 based on similar disks I have encountered. It could be significantly older; it's highly improbable that it is newer, it is not absolutely not a faux antique.
The disk is near-colorless with green. It's a substantial carving measuring just over 2" in diameter. At least that's what the gem lab report says, "near colorless." But I see a warmer tone than colorless. To me, as a gemologist myself, I see this as faintly yellow and green. Maybe its evidence of time itself, of so many years having passed since this was first carved and created, that have given the disk this visual warmth.
Pi (also known as bi) disks have been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. It's rather fascinating to consider: a disk, with a hole carved in the center. The hole changes everything, doesn't it? Suddenly, a disk becomes a metaphor for continuity, eternity, and longevity. The disk has symbolized all of these qualities and more. It represents both heaven and earth; the qualities of virtue and prosperity. The disk is profoundly simple and just as profoundly rich in meaning.
This extraordinary piece ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is natural and untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).
