The years between 1900 and the beginning of WWI saw the rise of a new aesthetic: the so-called garland style revived neo-classical elements, stylistic characteristics of the Louis Quinze period and motifs from classical antiquity. Laurels, festoons and bows defined this style, and precious materials in gleaming white seemed most apt to emphasize the much-desired lightness of design. The necklace at hand is a fine example of the garland style, which was greatly favoured by nobility and socialites in Europe’s vibrant capitals. Since diamond jewellery was then still confined to evening wear, only those who regularly frequented dinners, soirées and balls would have owned such pieces. Approx. 2.49 ct of white diamonds in historical cuts are set in platinum on gold, so that the entire surface appears to be suffused in light. A large bow dangles centrally, et with large old European cut diamonds. Throughout the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, bows and knots were symbols of the bond between two people, making this necklace a wonderful choice for a romantic gift – as it might well have been, more than a century ago. Despite its wealth of precious materials, the overall effect of the necklace is delicate and ethereal. It is in excellent condition.
