When message of the rich topaz deposits in Ouro Preto, Brazil, reached Lisbon, the Portuguese court prepared splendid festivities. Ever since 1751, there had been rumours of a 'Brazilian ruby', a new gemstone from Brazil, which was to financially replenish the Crown. In 1768, the rumours were finally confirmed, and Joseph I. and the entire court held a feast. The gemstone they celebrated, the Imperial topaz, still fascinates gemstone lovers today. Sherry brown to pink in colour, it is only found in Ouro Preto and remains the rarest and most sought-after topaz due to its brightness and clarity. Indeed, for many generations the supply was so scarce that the Imperial topaz was only available to the European nobility. At the end of the 19th century, the deposits were said to be entirely exhausted – until, in 1908, more gemstones could be found at a greater depth. The pendant at hand has been crafted around such a gemstone. The large Imperial topaz of approx. 11.2 carats shows the typical orange-golden colour and has been set into a delicate frame of platinum, set with 111 diamonds. The setting follows the cushion-like shape of the topaz and frames the gemstone with a pierced decor of leaves and blossoms, a typical design feature of the so-called garland style jewels of the years around 1910. The pendant is in excellent condition. We have added a matching platinum chain. An independent certificate by a renowned gemological institute will be delivered along with it.
