About the Item
This cool, colorful pendant came to us as a pin, but it had no identifying hallmarks, so we're not too sure about its origins. In the 1950s and 1960s, Brazilian jewelers made pieces like this to showcase their country's gemological riches (H. Stern's oft-copied "Sputnik" pendant is a good example), and the customer from whose estate we purchased the pin had other pieces from Brazil, so we're assuming it's mid-Century, probably Brazilian.
Most of the stones are tourmaline, including the beautiful center stone -- a 2.7 carat cut-corner step cut (not quite emerald cut).
The "stem" is set with almandine garnets, and there are four more garnets on the perimeter. The yellow stones are citrines. The rest of the stones are tourmalines. (Note that we're not sure about the four small orange stones dotting the center stone; they're most likely either hessonite garnet or madeira citrine, and we've assumed the latter.)
The stem garnets are straight baguettes, while the round stones are mostly single cuts, though some show a little extra faceting.
In total, there are 35 stones. We conservatively estimate the total gem weight at 9.36 carats:
12 citrines - 2.16 carats
9 garnets - 1.75 carats
14 tourmalines - 5.45 carats
The "flower" stones are all prong-set in deep open bezels, while the stem is a channel with prongs to hold the ends of each garnet. Beautiful workmanship throughout.
We removed the pin hardware and added a simple bale, which includes a nicely oversized closed jump ring to accommodate all manner of chain hardware. Speaking of chains, the copper-colored wrapped fiber cord, shown in some of the photos, is included. It's about 16" long and has a black bayonet closure.
With the bale, the pendant measures 2.2" long and 1.13" wide.
As mentioned above, this pendant doesn't have any markings but we guarantee it to be 14 karat gold.
