About the Item

Aperfect 19 carat gold heart-shaped gold locket decorated with a colorful flower bouquet on a light blue background, a different bouquet on each side of the locket, suspending from a large hoop with a striped decoration in blue enamel and gold, the side of the heart has green gold leaves, the locket is marked with a ’tête de bébé, for works of 19 carat gold from Paris after 1797 and with the makers mark for: Gabriel-Raoul Morel (1764-1832). Gabriel-Raoul Morel was born in Paris in 1764 and registered his mark in 1797 under the French Revolutionary government. Later he became a famed goldsmith at the French royal court and - together with his son: Alexander Raoul (1801 – 1886) - he was one of the most important suppliers of gold boxes during the First and the Second Empire. Morel worked for jewellers such as Marguerite fils, Petit Jean and Ouizille; he produced boxes for the courts of Louis XVIII and Charles X. He also worked for Gibert, a goldsmith at the Quai Voltaire and for Martial Bernard, jeweller to King Louis-Philippe. Gabriel-Raoul Morel’s work can be distinguished in three different periods: 1798-1809, 1809-1819 and from 1819 until 1838. The Louvre in Paris holds objects from all three of Morel’s creative periods – two snuff boxes, a chocolate box and a dance card holder with pencil holder. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York also owns pieces by Morel, likewise the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum in London. One side of the locket has been engraved for the occasion of the marriage of James and Stéphanie in 1828 and the birth of their daughter Marie in 1829. weight: 11.33 grams dimensions: 4 x 2.5 cm
