About the Item
This is a very early and rare Museum Quality Georgian Locket Pendant Necklace with an extraordinary hand painted portrait miniature of a child with a dove bird. The portrait miniature is of the highest quality. The face of the child is exquisite as is the body and the diaphanous lace wrap and ribbon the child holds in one hand. On the ribbon is painted the words Manuel di Duarda and more which I cannot decipher (Duarda may not be quite correct). The rarity of the miniature is enhanced by the addition of the bird or dove at the child's feet. Finding miniatures with children and animals is very rare and these are highly coveted. The painting is from a very fine collection of early portrait miniatures that depict animals in the scene. The child sits on a red velvet cushion with gold trim and in front of a decorated wall. The painting is on paper. The frame is a gilt metal. The locket opens on the reverse to place a photo of your choosing. Finding a locket pendant with such beautiful imagery of the dove and child is exceedingly rare and makes the jewel a highly regarded piece.
This is a very early jewel - most likely dating to the 18th Century to early 19th Century.
The jewel is worthy of the antique jewelry collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
The pendant is 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) tall including the bales.
Without the bales the locket is 2 1/4 inches (57mm) tall and is 1 7/8 inches (48mm) wide.
