Rare, historically important antique Russian Imperial Tsar Paul I double sided gilded silver pectoral cross known as Pavlovsky Cross
19th Century
Tsar Paul I was the first Russian Tsar to establish the practice of awarding Russian Orthodox spiritual leaders with a special pectoral cross, known as Pavlovsky cross, designed to celebrate their exceptional service. Pavlovsky cross depicts the image of Jesus on the cross in applied relief topped with the cryptogram for Jesus Nazarine, Tsar Judea. On verso, the royal cypher of Paul I, cyrillic P with the Roman numeral 1, with the inscription Presvitery dauschemy obraz vernum zhiteliam, ystanovleno v blagochestivoe tsarstvovanie Velikovo Gocydaria Imperatora Pavla I 1797, Dekabr 18- translation: Presbyter giving image to the faithful residents, established during the good will reign of the Great Sovreign Paul I, 1797, December 18.
These crosses were cherished by their recipients and were passed down generation to generation with original pieces rarely ever available. This cross has a fine, smooth patina from being reverently handled over many years. The image of Jesus is well defined as is the inscription on the back.
Marks: Moscow town mark 84 Russian silver purity mark, BA maker's mark for V. Akimov (Postnikova-Loseva #711) whose work is in the permanent collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow.
Condition: Very Good, beautiful age appropriate patina, light surface wear, wear to gilding
