This is a beautiful Beaux Arts - Art Nouveau - Belle Epoque pendant necklace or brooch in the Renaissance Revival style and dates to circa 1860-1900. The pendant is from the personal collection of the legendary style icon Iris Apfel. It depicts a wonderful griffin or dragon with magnificent diamonds in a stunning three dimensional deep repousse design in gorgeous 18 Karat Yellow Gold. The Griffin holds a Rose Cut Diamond in its mouth of 3.5 to 4mm in diameter and another Rose Cut Diamond hangs from the bottom of the pendant. The jewel is French with French hallmarks. The face of the griffin dragon is extraordinary with magnificent gold work. The wings are absolutely gorgeous with finely detailed feathers.
The jewel is currently designed as both a pendant and a brooch. To be worn as a pendant necklace the piece has two loops to which you may attach your favorite chain, or you may thread a chain through the loops (you will most likely have to remove one end of the clasp to thread the chain through and then reattach the clasp). It also has the pin to be worn as a brooch. The pendant is a fabulous large size.
The gold workmanship on the dragon is very fine with superb detail. I love the three dimensional element of the jewel. The overall effect of the exquisite gold work, the griffin dragon motif and the rose cut diamonds in this early antique piece is truly magical. With the unparalleled provenance of Iris Apfel it is a treasure.

The pendant/brooch is 18 Karat gold with French hallmarks.
The pendant/brooch is 1 3/4 inches (45mm) tall and is 1 7/8 inches (47mm) wide.
The pendant weighs 17.4 grams. It is a very substantial piece.

For nearly half a century, Iris Apfel was beloved for her bold aesthetic, known for seamlessly combining colors, textures and patterns in new ways, redefining traditional notions of fashion and design. She was undeniably a trendsetter, instantly recognizable by her oversized oval glasses, silver hair and arms adorned with chunky bangles. Iris Apfel captivated the world with her brilliant and bold style over a thrilling eight-decade career. An interior designer, textile entrepreneur, businessperson and fashion icon who became a model at age 97, Apfel embraced daring individuality and helped rewrite the rules of style.
Dubbed ‘the matriarch of maximalism’ by the BBC, she was known for her embrace of bold patterns, copious accessories and fearless colour choices.
‘When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else,’ she told the New York Times in 2011. Fashion, for Apfel, was the ultimate form of self-expression, an unmatched way to tell your own story.
Long a fixture of the fashion world, Apfel became a household name in 2005 with Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection, an exhibition of her wardrobe at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The show marked the first exhibition where the Costume Institute had featured a living person who was not a fashion designer. After Rara Avis (meaning ‘rare bird’), Apfel’s star continued to rise as she collaborated with brands from MAC Cosmetics to Swarovski and H&M. In 2014, when Apfel was 93, she was the focus of Albert Maysles’ documentary Iris. In 2018, she modelled for Vogue, and Mattel released a Barbie in her name. In 2019, she signed as a model to IMG at 97. Her Instagram account boasts more than three million followers.
