About the Item
This stunning demi-parure, consisting of earrings and a necklace, was crafted by Jean Vendome in France in 1984. Made from 18 karat yellow gold, it features diamonds totaling approximately 2.00 carats and striking rutilated quartz and comes with its original box. This one-of-a-kind set is a masterpiece of design. The gold collar necklace sits comfortably around the neck and centers on a cluster of rutilated quartz tablets with golden needles resembling sun rays. Vendome enhanced the design with yellow gold rays mounted with baguette-cut diamonds, perfectly mirroring the quartz’s natural beauty. The earclips sit comfortably on the lobe, with the glow of the stones and gold brightening the face. The necklace measures 16 inches in length, the earrings 1.25 inches, and are stamped with Jean Vendome’s maker’s mark and French assay marks. The pendant measures 2 inches long x 2.5 inches wide.
Jean Vendome (1930 – 2017), born in Lyon, France, is celebrated as a pioneer of avant-garde jewelry. He began his jewelry apprenticeship at age 13 with his uncle, Parisian jeweler Der, and opened his own shop in the 1950s. Yearning for creative freedom, Vendome set up his first independent shop at 18 in Paris, where he focused on the natural beauty of stones rather than their value.
Vendome’s creations stood out for their bold use of organic forms, irregular volumes, and a profusion of colors, combining unfinished gems, fossil ammonites, corals, pearls, and crystals. He became a leader among avant-garde jewelers alongside Henri Gargat and Dinh Van. His designs, known for their unique adaptation to the body, challenged traditional jewelry norms.
Vendome produced over 37,000 unique pieces during his 50-year career, leaving a lasting legacy as a visionary in contemporary jewelry design.
