About the Item

This Lapponia piece is a wonderful example of modernist Nordic design and craftsmanship, blending innovation with timeless Nordic style. This diamond and 18-karat yellow gold necklace with a detachable pendant was made in Finland in 2009, and is in excellent condition. Weighing 39.72 grams, the pendant measures 1.66” x 1.34”, while the necklace is 16” long and secured with a sturdy safety clasp. The geometric pendant features a striking net of cubes, seemingly suspended in space while seamlessly connected by 12 round brilliant-cut diamonds. The interplay between open spaces and sparkling diamonds allows light to move across the design, while the textured yellow gold adds warmth and depth. The comfortable, articulated chain is designed for versatility—wear it alone for a sleek, refined look or with the pendant for a bold statement. Lapponia, the renowned Finnish jewelry house, was founded in 1960 by Pekka Anttila in Helsinki. From its inception, the brand set itself apart with its bold, sculptural designs, embracing a distinctly modernist aesthetic that challenged conventional jewelry-making traditions. Inspired by the rugged landscapes of Finland, Arctic nature, and organic forms, Lapponia’s creations are known for their fluid, asymmetrical structures and masterful craftsmanship. One of the defining moments in Lapponia’s history was its collaboration with Björn Weckström, a visionary designer who joined the company in the 1960s. His innovative approach to jewelry, characterized by freeform surfaces and raw, textured gold, quickly gained international recognition. Perhaps the most famous Lapponia piece is the “Planetoid Valleys” necklace, worn by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in the final scene of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). This cemented Lapponia’s status as an icon of modernist design in cinematic history. Lapponia continued to push artistic boundaries, working with other notable designers such as Kalevala Koru, who later acquired the brand in 2005. The company remained dedicated to sustainable practices, using recycled gold and silver while maintaining the highest standards of Finnish craftsmanship. Today, Lapponia’s jewelry is celebrated worldwide for its fusion of nature, art, and innovation. It especially appeals to collectors and design enthusiasts who appreciate its distinctive Nordic aesthetic and timeless artistry.
