This fabulous jewel is known as the Flemish Heart, a beautiful, unique love token. This type of jewel was historically given as a symbol of love on Mother's Day, celebrated in Antwerp on August 15th and on the second Sunday in May in the United States and other parts of the world. It also a symbol of devotion for the Madonna- the crowned heart representing the heart of Mary. The crowing is a collection of the four elements of love trophies- a torch, a quiver, a bow and a laurel wreath. The laurel embodies the truimph of love and the torch, quiver and bow are traditional attributes of Amor.
It is exceedingly rare to see a signed Neoclassical period Georgian era jewel and we were delighted to discover this superb example. It bears the single sword mark for the Netherlands, post 1814 with the maker's initials VS. The fine workmanship and impressive scale of this beautiful pendant suggest that it was created for a prominent individual. Diamond set love trophies in the form of a bow, a quiver of arrows laurel wreath and a flaming torch top a three tier diamond set heart shaped pendant centered by a lovely large natural rose cut diamond. Georgian period diamond jewels have experienced a Renaissance in the past few years for their one-of-a-kind aesthetic, the use of natural diamonds and fabulous, singular designs. Historical jewels are a perfect pairing with today's style- they add interest and drama to both streamlined and romantic bohemian looks.
