This pendant is composed of a large silver coin from the mint of the Serenissima Republic of Genoa and dates to 1670. The coin can be traced back to the series produced in Genoa starting from 1638, when the obverse began to be decorated with an extremely expressive and evocative image of the Madonna with child and cherubs; the reverse, however, began to be characterized by a patent cross, in this case embellished with cherubs and floral motifs. Both the depiction of the obverse and reverse of the coin are enclosed within a circle determined by a very fine watermark, outside which there are inscriptions bearing, among other information, the date of minting. This coin constitutes a very precious example of the desire of the Republic of Genoa to celebrate the Madonna as "Queen of Genoa" following the annexation of Corsica by the Republic. Furthermore, the presence of the inscription on the edge is an indication of the fact that the coin was made using the "third coinage", which is a technique that allowed the coins to be further embellished and to avoid the phenomenon of shearing, the practice that allowed to be taken possession improperly of a part of the metal. Finally, the pendant is completed by a frame characterized by a very precious decoration with acanthus leaves set with rubies and interspersed with natural turquoises which give greater prominence to the composition.
