About the Item
A large and fabulous Mongolian silver "spirit lock" necklace with turquoise and coral bead accents, most likely made in China for the Mongolian market, early 20th century, circa 1910.
The heavy silver necklace featuring a lock charm pendant cast in high relief with an image of the Immortal Magu (the Hemp Goddess) riding a mythical qilin under the sun, moon and stars. The border featuring squirrels amongst grapes, stylized hemp leaves, and various blossoms.
The back of the lock inscribed in high relief with the characters "Chang Ming Fu Gui", wishing the wearer a long life and many riches. Peony and plum blossoms are also cast in high relief, along with a pair of double fish yin/yang symbols within a chrysanthemum blossom. The border similar to that on the front.
The chain of linked silver and set with turquoise and coral beads. One pair of coral beads carved with coiled chilong dragons.
Spirit locks are generally worn to protect the wearer from evil and misfortune, and to wish them long life and prosperity.
The carved coral beads measuring approximately 22mm in diameter. The large turquoise beads measuring approximately 19mm in diameter. The central coral bead measuring 20mm in diameter.
