About the Item
"Plique à Jour" is a French term that means "letting in daylight". The term refers to the jewelry technique in which enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing. This allows light to shine through the transparent or translucent enamel, forming a beautiful stained glass appearance.
This incredible and colorful Larter
Sons. pendant is a wonderful example of plique-à-jour jewelry from the Art Nouveau (ca1910s) era! Crafted in 14k yellow gold, the surface of this disc-shaped pendant is decorated with intricate plique-à-jour enameling. The enameling resembles stained glass, and incorporates red, yellow, green, and blue hues. The center of the disc-shaped pendant features a gold cross, which is adorned with texturizing engravings, and centered by a small prong-set diamond. The top of the pendant features a complimentary bail, which would allow the piece to easily attach to a favorite gold chain. The backside of the pendant features a "14K" purity mark, and the Larter
Sons. signature. A one-of-a-kind piece, this pendant would make a gorgeous addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs 1 1/4" long (including the bail), and has a width of just under 1".
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the plique-à-jour enameling. The small diamond is intact and securely set. The bail is secure and in working order.
