About the Item
A magnificent and highly collectible piece of antique jewelry, this French Bresse enamel cross pendant hails from the late Victorian era, circa 1870s-1880s. Crafted using the rare Bresse enamel technique, this pendant features intricately layered enamel plaques set upon a silver base, showcasing the distinctive artistry of the Bourg-en-Bresse region in eastern France.
Each individual enamel plaque is carefully built up with vibrant layers of colored enamels and gold leaf, often accented with tiny stones, creating a rich, multi-textured surface. The plaques are then carefully assembled to form the cross, producing a remarkable and visually striking effect.
While originally gold-gilded, only traces of the gilding remain, revealing the silver beneath. The cross measures 5 1/4 inches by 2 3/4 inches at its widest point and weighs 27 grams, giving it a substantial and commanding presence.
Condition: Considering its age, the pendant is in excellent condition overall. There is some very minor loss to the enamel upon close inspection, consistent with its age. The gold gilding has worn with time, but the intricate craftsmanship and beauty of the piece remain intact. The cross has been tested and is confirmed to be made of silver, though it is unmarked.
This is a rare and stunning example of antique French craftsmanship, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of jewelry history from the Georgian-Victorian period.
