This is a Museum Quality Antique Etruscan Revival Victorian Carved Coral Necklace depicting Medusa with a Crown of Snakes with two pear shape coral drop pendants. The Coral Medusa is set in 14-18 Karat Gold with extraordinary Etruscan Revival beaded cannetille surmounts on the coral drops and a barrel clasp connecting the fine Etruscan gold chain. The necklace is a masterpiece of the period. The three dimensional head of Medusa is exquisitely carved. The face is spectacular with an open mouth and the fully three dimensional tongue visible! The snake filled hair is dramatic and alive with snakes at the top and bottom of the head. The hair is absolutely a wonder of antique coral carving. The carving continues onto the top of the head. This neoclassical jewel is to be treasured by collectors of superb antique jewels, lovers of Medusa, snakes, Etruscan Revival, and those who treasure the early coral masterpieces. The necklace dates to circa 1830 - 1900.
And snake jewelry is all the rage today. In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom.
The necklace is 17 inches long.
The pendant portion is 2 1/2 inches (6cm) long.
The head of Medusa is 1 inch (26mm) long and is 23mm wide and 1/2 inch deep.
