About the Item
A fun and fabulous jewel, this pendant was originally a charm for a charm bracelet! Charm bracelets in the 1950s were big and bold, with figural and gem-studded charms all the rage. Depicting a carriage, this charm is studded with chalcedony gemstones and best of all, the wheels move just as in a real carriage! Crafted with true artistry that is rarely found in modern jewels. This charm would have been nestled among others on a statement charm bracelet, jingling charmingly as it’s owner went about her day.
Hallmarked and tested for 14K gold, this charm weighs 11.3 grams and measures 37.6 mm tall by 25 mm wide. A wide bail ensures its versatility, enabling you to wear it with a variety of chains in your collection.
Regarding the History of MidCentury Jewelry
Following the austerity of World War II, jewels and fashion were again full of color, flamboyance and a sense of fabulous over-the-top extravagance. Bold, colored gemstones and brilliant diamonds were set into gold of all colors and platinum, palladium and white gold once again were available for jewelry creations. Jewels in this decade made a statement and rings remained large as in the 1930’s and 1940’s, but the sharp geometric lines of the Art Deco era softened into curved outlines. In the 50s and 60s, “the more the merrier,” applied not only to life, but to jewelry as well.
