About the Item
INDULGE IN A SPECTACULAR MUSEUM QUALITY ANTIQUE ARTS AND CRAFTS TURQUOISE SILVER PENDANT NECKLACE BY MURRLE BENNETT
CO. THE STUNNING ARTS AND CRAFTS ART NOUVEAU PENDANT NECKLACE DATES TO CIRCA 1900.
The turquoise silver drop pendant is by one of the great jewelry makers, Murrle Bennett
Co., in the Arts and Crafts style of the period. Murrle Bennet jewels are very rare and collectable today. The pendant is signed with the MB
Co mark on the back.
Murrle Bennett
Co. jewelers were established in London in 1884. The partners were Ernst Mürrle, a German immigrant and Mr Bennett who was his English partner. The pair produced jewelry largely in the Arts and Crafts, Jugendstil style. Their pieces were sold at Liberty
Co in London. Their designs were characterized by Celtic-inspired interlacing elements, stylized foliate forms, pierced geometric shapes, hammering, rivets, luminous enamels and semiprecious stones.
This is a rare jewel by Murrle Bennett
Co in the Arts and Crafts style. The piece is so beautifully made. The pendant is centered with a gorgeous round turquoise cabochon set in a milgrain beaded border. The pendant has open work flower motifs at the top and bottom with applied hand hammered beading. A further oval turquoise cabochon hangs from the bottom, which is again set in a beaded collet. The silver has a hand hammered finish throughout. What a gorgeous piece.
The necklace is the epitome of style and elegance and is worthy of the great jewelry collections in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The pendant is 1 7/8 inches (48 mm) long including the bales.
Without the bales it is 1 1/2 inches (39mm) long and 15/16 inch (24 mm) wide.
The pendant is hallmarked with the MB
Co for Murrle, Bennet
Co. and either 850 or 950 for silver content.
The silver bead chain is 17 inches long.
The necklace weighs 8.6 grams.
