About the Item
This exceptional antique Burmese jadeite carving—guaranteed natural and untreated by our Certified Professional Gemologist—captures one of the most auspicious motifs in Chinese decorative arts: a harmonious pair of birds nestled among chrysanthemum blossoms. Carved around the turn of the 20th century, the plaque is mounted in a period sterling bezel and suspended from a long, modern 26-inch sterling chain that slips comfortably over the head without a clasp.
The jadeite itself is a lush, deep green with the soft luster and tactile smoothness associated only with genuine, untreated jade from Burma (Myanmar). Measuring 45 mm x 29 mm, the plaque has remarkable presence without feeling overwhelming. The sterling mount, silver chains, and soldered rear jump rings strongly suggest that this piece originally served as a brooch or garment ornament before being converted for contemporary wear. The entire pendant weighs 16 grams.
The turn-of-the (previous)-century craftsmanship is perfectly reflective of what remains a "golden age" of lapidary arts in China.
