About the Item
This remarkable pendant showcases a hand-carved natural and untreated Fei Cui jade plaque—GIA’s updated terminology for the jadeite–omphacite family of true jade—here represented by an unusually vivid and translucent Guatemalan jade of exceptional quality. Floating within its tailored 18k yellow gold frame, the jade measures approximately 23mm tall x 15mm at its widest point. The pendant in total measures 28mm x 16mm.
Thickness cannot be determined due to the secure custom mounting. Total weight: 4 grams.
The carving depicts a traditional mountain retreat scene: sweeping ridgelines rising into layered peaks, a stylized pine flanking the central slope, and a rocky outcropping with botanicals rendered in low relief near the base. The artist allowed portions of the jade’s natural translucency to remain uncarved, creating glowing windows of pure color that contrast beautifully with the matte, textural surfaces of the carved areas. When light enters from behind, the stone radiates a deep yet luminous green distinctive to high-grade Guatemalan Fei Cui—an intensity and clarity seldom encountered in untreated material.
Although the piece has not been sent to a laboratory, our Certified Professional Gemologist—a second-generation jade collector, the first man ever featured in The New York Times Jewelry Section, and a widely respected authority on jade—has examined the carving and its internal structure. He has determined that this is natural and untreated Fei Cui jade, carved from a single block of genuine jadeite-family material with no impregnation, dye, polymer, or enhancement.
GIA’s modern classification recognizes Fei Cui as the umbrella term encompassing natural jadeite, omphacite, and kosmochlor compositions and replaces earlier, less precise naming conventions. This pendant’s color, translucency, and internal grain align with the finest natural Guatemalan Fei Cui seen in contemporary carving.
A refined and wearable piece of modern jade art, set simply in luxurious 18k gold to showcase the stone without distraction. Rare in this quality and entirely untreated.
