About the Item
This simple but striking diamond fob was originally a hat pin. Eytan Brandes converted it to a pendant by forming part of the needle into a bale and soldering it shut.
The diamond is a nice natural (i.e., earth-mined) hand-cut round in the classic old European style: small table, high crown and a visible culet. It's fairly clean and bright -- probably H-I color and VS2-SI1 clarity. At just over 13mm, we estimate a weight between 0.10 to 0.12 carats.
The diamond sits in a little "shadow box" with six prongs and a dark, oxidized background.
The back is stamped "14K" along with an intriguing maker's mark. We think the mark is for Richardson Manufacturing Company or one of its many earlier iterations dating all the way back to its founding in 1841. This New Jersey company was out of business by 1950. We think the stickpin probably dates from the 1930's or then-abouts.
The 5mm bale will accommodate most chains of commensurate size, but we like it with the 16.5" bead necklace we made for it.* It features sparkly faceted rondelles of orange hessonite garnet and rutilated quartz plus some 14 karat gold beads thrown in for good measure. The necklace about 4mm thick and is finished with a 14 karat gold pearl clasp. The necklace is removable.
