About the Item
This is a wonderful and rare Museum Quality Art Nouveau Brooch in the form of a Butterfly or Moth. The magnificent Butterfly has exquisite Plique-a-jour enamel wings, a fine blue Sapphire body and is set with Diamonds along the wings, body, antennae and eyes and is 18 Karat Gold. Plique-a-jour enamel is the most exquisite and difficult to create form of enamel as it requires a master artisan to make the see through open backed stained glass effect of the enamel. The light pours through radiating the gorgeous pastel colors of blue, green and orange in the wings of the butterfly or moth. The magnificent enamel is highlighted by the ribbon of diamonds along the wings. The diamonds continue on the tail of the butterfly, and in the eyes and antennae. In the center of the butterfly is a gorgeous fine blue sapphire cabochon. The butterfly is 18 Karat Gold. The jewel is masterpiece of Art Nouveau nature inspired artistry and the work of one of the finest jewelers. The butterfly can be worn as a brooch or easily converted to a pendant if desired.
Plique-à-jour, is a French term that translates to “letting in the daylight” and defines a type of transparent enamel that has no backing. Similar to a stained glass window, the design has a metal outline filled with various colored transparent, glass-like enamels.
First discovered in the 15th century by Benvenuto Cellini, plique-à-jour was rediscovered in France circa 1900 and soared to new heights during the Art Nouveau period.
Plique-à-jour provides a natural translucency, similar to that found in nature, which makes it ideal for rendering leaves, flowers, insect wings and other gossamer illusions.
The butterfly is 1 5/8 inches (42 mm) wide and 1 1/4 inch (30mm) tall.
