About the Item
This gorgeous Art Nouveau-era piece came to us as a pin with a broken catch, so we decided to convert it to a pendant.
Our friend boasts meticulous enamel work, in understated hues of blue, green and gold, plus 51 natural, clean and bright Swiss cut, pavé-set diamonds, and ruby cabochon eyes.
What kind of insect is he? No idea. Children's illustrations not withstanding, curly antennas really aren't all that common in the insect world. Nor are wings originating right below the head. And the inside wings are generally smaller than the outside wings. And he kinda looks like his thorax and abdomen are one piece. We couldn't find too many insects that combine all of these features. The closest we could come up with is either a very small-headed cicada or a lacewing, which is a green bug much loved by gardeners for Hoovering up aphids.
More likely he's just the designer;s creative amalgam of a pretty insect.
Unfortunately, we can't ask him because the piece is not signed. Other than the workmanship and the use of Swiss cut diamonds, we don't really have much to go on in dating this piece, but we're guessing pre-1920 since the use of Swiss cut diamonds in small sizes faded out in the Deco period, with the rise of more pavé and the need for an easier-to-produce cut (i.e., the single cut).
The back of the pin is stamped 750 for 18 karat gold. The use of "750" instead of "18K" suggests a European origin, but isn't proof-positive.
The bale, with inside dimensions of approx. 4mm x 5mm, is big enough to accommodate most complementary-sized chains. We wanted to pair him with some ethereal sparkle so we are including an 18" bead necklace of yellow and white topaz, multi-colored sapphires, rutilated golden quartz, labradorite, and aquamarine. This necklace is approximately 3mm thick and has a 14 karat gold recycled pearl clasp.
