About the Item
This is an absolutely stunning and very rare antique Victorian Cameo Pendant with a high relief carving of a Dove Bird flying towards a stunning Flower Bouquet of extraordinary beauty. The Cameo is the work of a master artisan and the motif with the bird and the flowers is exceedingly rare. The large size is magnificent. The flowers are beautifully carved with very high three dimensional relief and delicate detail in the flowers and leaves and in the high relief of the petals. The artisan used the natural color variation within the shell to add coral peach colored accents to the flowers and the bird.
During the Victorian period jewelry with birds was often given to signify love and constancy across both distance and time. Jewelry featuring birds was often given to young couples or exchanged between them on their wedding day, and was worn by both men and women.
The shell cameo is set in a gorgeous Gold filled setting. The bale is 14 Karat Gold. This is one of the most beautiful Cameos that we have seen and the rare imagery is such a delight to behold. The pendant dates to circa 1860-1900.
The cameo pendant is 2 inches (54mm) tall not including the bales and 2 1/2 inches tall including the bales. It is 1 3/4 inches (45mm) wide. The pendant is 1/2 inch (12mm) deep.
The bale is 14 Karat Gold. The frame is gold-filled.
The pendant weighs 16.4 grams.
