About the Item
An exceptional Edwardian Belle-Epoque pearl and diamond sautoir, the sautoir comprising a long mesh chain of natural seed pearls diamond pendant, this openwork of foliate openwork design, with central circular pendant drop, setting with nine articulated Old European cut diamonds individually set with a surround of old and cushion-cut diamonds and hand fabricated in platinum.
Sautoirs were very popular during the Edwardian and Belle Époque with the most valuable examples consisting of woven strands of seed pearls or diamonds terminating with diamond-set pendants or tassels of fine millegrain and wirework. These pendants were often influenced by the naturalistic decorations of the period and included garland ribbon and floral motifs. The present piece is in fine condition and is a rare surviving example of an original design. The fact that this sautoir is a truly breathtaking Belle Époque masterpiece!
