This refined Renaissance pendant dates to the late 16th century and is distinguished by its cross shape, which is emphasized in the centre by the presence of calibré-cut emeralds. The outline of the pendant, on the other hand, is composed of a very thin filigree, while the ends and connection points of the cross are decorated with acanthus leaves, necessary to give uniformity to the composition and coloured with white and green enamels that take up the nuances of the central emeralds. These enamels are applied with the en ronde bosse technique, particularly widespread in Renaissance goldsmith art, characterised by relief and all-round decorations, which required a specific application of the enamels, so that they did not undergo variations, and of which Benvenuto Cellini's Salt Shaker is a perfect example. The geometric and floral decorations, however, also continue on the sides and back of the pendant, where the arms of the cross are further embellished with embossed gold applications. The pendant is in excellent conservative condition and is a perfect example of the mastery of Renaissance goldsmith art, in which geometric compositions, precious stones and the refined use of enamels were preferred.
