About the Item

This exquisite necklace by Santo Domingo (Kewa) artist Jolene Bird features a stunning combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. The piece showcases five mosaic inlaid dragonflies, each uniquely hand-crafted and reversible, suspended along two strands of finely cut turquoise beads. The turquoise strands create a rich, textured backdrop that enhances the brilliance of the inlay work. Each dragonfly is a miniature masterpiece, with wings composed of hand-cut stones set into intricate mosaic patterns. The result is a vibrant expression of movement, balance, and natural beauty. In Native American symbolism, the dragonfly is a powerful emblem of transformation, adaptability, and joy. Among Pueblo peoples, it is often associated with water, life, and renewal, representing a connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Wearing the dragonfly can signify harmony, change, and a reminder to live life with lightness and purpose. Materials: Nevada Turquoise, Coral, Jet, Mother of Pearl, Spiny Oyster, Sterling Silver Size: • Inner strand length: 29" • Center dragonfly: 4" L × 4¼" W • Adjacent dragonflies: 3⅞" L × 4⅛" W and 3⅞" L × 3¾" W • Outer dragonflies: 3¾" L × 3¼" W and 3½" L × 3¼" W • Closure: Sterling silver hook and eye This reversible necklace is a testament to Jolene Bird’s exceptional lapidary skill and artistry, blending natural materials with traditional Pueblo techniques. Whether worn for a special occasion or displayed as a collector’s piece, it captures the spirit of handcrafted excellence and the timeless beauty of the Southwest. About the Artist Jolene Bird (Kewa, b. 1963) is a renowned lapidary artist and jeweler from Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. Taught by her grandfather, she learned to identify and work with high-grade stones used in traditional Santo Domingo inlay. She later studied silversmithing at the Poeh Institute and Art Center in Pojoaque Pueblo. Bird hand-cuts and finishes each bead and inlay by hand, creating signature mosaic works celebrated for their precision and vibrant color. Her jewelry has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Santa Fe Indian Market, and other major venues, earning her numerous awards for excellence in stone inlay craftsmanship.
