About the Item
This is a rare Museum Quality Belle Epoque - Art Nouveau Limoges Enamel Cupid and Psyche Pendant with a Ruby, Pearl and Old Mine Cut Diamond Border in 14 Karat Gold. The pendant is an exquisite rendering of Love in both the image of Cupid and Psyche and its use of the ruby and diamond gems. The pendant dates to 1890. It has a pin stem to be worn as a brooch if desired.
In the center is an extraordinary Limoges Enamel image of Cupid and Psyche. The image is hand painted enamel and is done "en grisaille," which is using shades of white and gray. Cupid and Psyche stand in a bucolic garden setting with flowers and vines. On the top of a column next to Psyche are two hearts! This is such a fabulous romantic element to this jewel. The figures and image are raised in a three dimensional rendering atop a dark red engine turned guilloche checkerboard background. The red background is more or less visible depending upon the reflection of light hitting the image. The image is a transcendent masterpiece of Limoges enamel artistry and is an elegant statement of love.
The surrounding jewels are of the highest quality. There are six trefoil designs with Rubies and Old Mine Cut Diamonds. The ruby gems are of superb quality. The rubies are gem quality, fire engine red and have spectacular fire. The rubies are .05-.07 Carats each.
Below each ruby are two sparkling white antique Old Mine Cut Diamonds. These gorgeous chunky Old MIne Diamonds are absolutely wonderful. They range in size from .07-.10 Carats.
Alternating between the rubies and diamonds are stunning 4mm pearls. These are gorgeous pearls with superb color and luster.
The reverse is inscribed: "Paula from Louis, January 10, 1890."
Limoges Enamels have been produced since the 1200s. They have been collected throughout the centuries by avid collectors. The artists creating jewels during the Belle Epoque to Art Nouveau period created some of the most beautiful Limoges enamel images. These Art Nouveau pieces are exceedingly rare as they were created in very limited quantities, each being a unique piece of original art.
The pendant is 2 inches (52mm) tall including the bales.
Without the bales the pendant is 1 1/2 inches (38mm) tall and is 1 1/2 inches (38mm) wide.
The pendant is hallmarked 14K on the clasp.
