About the Item
This is a magnificent Austro-Hungarian Sapphire and Pearl Pendant Necklace with animal, bird, horse, deer and flower and leaf motifs. It is in the Renaissance Revival style in Silver and dates to circa 1870. The rare necklace has three articulated sections. The top with the deer or horse creatures, the center section has the animals as well as two birds in the center, below is a terminal pendant. The open work design with animals and birds and flowers is very rare and wonderful. The pendant has ten gorgeous round and oval natural faceted blue Sapphires of the most beautiful color. The larger sapphires are approximately .2 carats each. The pendant is further adorned with seven freshwater cultured pearls. The pearls are elegant silvery white pearls. The jewels are all set in raised collets creating the characteristic three dimensional design of the Austro-Hungarian and Renaissance Revival jewels. The overall effect of the Sapphire and Pearl gems with the animal and bird designs in this early antique necklace is truly magical.
The pendant is 2 1/2 inches (6.5cm) long, and 1 3/8 inches (3.5cm) wide.
The necklace chain is 18 inches long and is a later chain.
