About the Item
This striking Spiny Oyster cross pendant is crafted by master Navajo silversmith Herman Smith. The pendant measures 2½" x 3" and features a ¾" bale with a 3/8" bale diameter. A twisted wire border frames the cross, while silver raindrop accents sit between each of the nine Spiny Oyster cabochons, adding depth and traditional character. The piece is signed H S, Herman Smith’s hallmark, on the reverse.
About the Artist
Herman Smith comes from a long line of accomplished Navajo silversmiths. He began learning the art at age 13 under the guidance of his mother, Mary C. Yazzie, and is a cousin of silversmiths Terry and Calvin Martinez. Known for his traditional revival style, Herman is especially admired for his heavy-gauge ingot bracelets and deep, clean stampwork reminiscent of early Navajo masters. His pieces often incorporate fine turquoise, coral, and lapis, and in recent years he has expanded into contemporary designs, including channel inlay.
Although he works with remarkable precision and detail, Herman is known for achieving a wide variety of patterns using only a few hand-cut stamps. Over the years, he has faced persistent back problems and periods of severe pain, which at times have limited his ability to work—making his finished pieces all the more treasured by collectors.
