About the Item
This striking sterling silver butterfly pendant was handcrafted by Navajo silversmith Kathleen Chavez. Measuring 2 1/2” x 2 1/4”, the butterfly features purple spiny oyster and turquoise in the wings, while the body is inlaid with coral, Carico Lake turquoise, and Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The wings are bordered with multicolor spiny oyster and turquoise and delicately accented with silver drops along the edges. A 1/2” bale completes the design, bringing the pendant’s total length to 3 1/4”.
About the Artist
Kathleen Chavez (also known as Kathleen Livingston) was born on December 17, 1958, in Church Rock, New Mexico. A talented Navajo artist, Chavez is known for her traditional silversmithing and fine stamp work used to showcase carefully set stones.
She began her silversmithing career in 1974, initially crafting earrings, rings, and “slave bracelets.” In 1994, she began creating higher-end jewelry—work she describes as “much more fun to make, because of the amount of thought and imagination that goes into it.”
Today, Chavez continues to live in Church Rock with her husband, Lorenzo Juan, and works out of Gallup, New Mexico, producing exceptional pieces that reflect both heritage craftsmanship and her own creative vision.
