About the Item
This is one of the most exquisite Antique Victorian - Belle Epoque Cameo Locket Pendant Necklaces by the master cameo carver Tomasso Saulini of Rome, depicting an image of Winter, with a boy dressed in a wolf skin. The locket is 14 Karat Gold and adorned with gorgeous pale blue and cream colored enamel around the border and on the bale. The gold work is amongst the finest 19th Century Italian Etruscan Revival Gold work with gorgeous hand applied beading. Cameos by Saulini are the finest quality cameos in existence and were carved in the 19th Century in Rome. The extraordinary cameo is a museum quality jewel. The hand carved shell cameo depicts the young boy in his wolf skin holding a staff and a pomegranate or pineapple. The details are exquisite, and the face is a true masterpiece. The very deeply carved cameo is set in an oval frame in 14 Karat Gold. The frame is adorned with cannetille beading in the Etruscan Revival style. It is further adorned with Robins Egg Blue and cream colored enamel. The bale is a gorgeous large bale adorned with enamel and beading. The masterwork cameo has some of the finest three dimensional carving ever seen. The setting of the cameo is unparalleled. The locket opens on the reverse for you to place your favorite treasures or image.
The jewel dates to the Victorian - Belle Epoque period, circa 1850-1864.
TOMMASO SAULINI
Lived from 1793-1864.
Saulini was one of the most celebrated cameo-cutters in Rome in the mid-19th century, working in both hardstone and shell. Saulini exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862. He cut cameos for the Royal Order of Victoria
Albert and specifically for Queen Victoria herself.
