About the Item
Thimbles, when they're interesting, make great pendants when used as cappers for a nice big cabochon or pearl. Actually making this kind of pendant isn't for the faint of heart, however. Luckily, after almost 50 years as a goldsmith, Eytan is happy to take a break from producing his 10,000th engagement ring to do something a little different!
This thimble shows a bird with a tuft or crest on its head. There are a lot of birds with this particular millinery but we like quail -- they're cute and plump and make silly noises when they walk -- so we're going to stick with quail.
We don't actually know how old the thimble is but we're thinking 1950's or earlier. It's stamped "925" for sterling silver but there is no maker's mark outside or inside.
The thimble has a seam on the back and, for some reason, it had a hole at the bottom of the seam, near the edge. Eytan filled the hole with a white gold bezel holding a 0.10 carat diamond. A good way to fill a hole! The diamond is recycled from our stock of extracted stones. It's not a great diamond, being very "dirty," but it's perfect for this application. (And yes, it is of course an earth-mined diamond.)
The big hessonite garnet is attached via a 14 karat gold engraved wedding band. Eytan used this band as a bezel, then soldered it to the thimble. The ring was taken from our pre-owned stock and while it's got an antique look, it was actually made in the 1970's.
The 19mm garnet is from Sri Lanka and weighs 41 grams.
The two-strand garnet necklace shown in the photos was made specifically for this pendant and is included. (It is, however, removable and the fob's simple loop bale is big enough to accommodate most chain options.). The necklace is a double strand of boxy garnet beads in a range of orange, brown, and amber hues. It's 24" long and has a recycled pearl clasp in 14 karat gold.

Additions or alterations made to the original: The thimble, gold band and clasp are all recycled, though the band and clasp are relatively new while the thimble is probably at least 50 years old. All parts are in excellent condition. Eytan oxidized the thimble so that tarnish won t be much of a concern.

Eytan Brandes cast one of his old silver coins in 22 karat gold. It shows a beardless youth, possibly an early emperor (most of them wore beards after 117AD), as suggested by the diadem tied at the back of his neck.
No clue about the image on the back. With the lettering oriented north (and upside down), you can maybe see the neck of a horned animal, but that might just be us seeing things in a Rorschach test.
To frame this little homage to ancient commerce, Eytan crafted a platinum frame with four prongs on each side.
The pyrite chain, which we made specifically for this pendant, has a 14 karat white gold lobster closure.*
