This is a rare antique Victorian Mermaid and Snake Pendant Necklace depicting a snake or serpent wrapped around a mermaid holding a pearl in her hand. This is extraordinary imagery in this antique jewel that is over 100 years old. Mermaids symbolize independence and individuality while snakes symbolize eternal love, sexuality, rebirth and wisdom. The snake and mermaid are beautifully created in 14 Karat yellow gold. The mermaid holds a white pearl in her hands as she swims.
The mermaid snake pendant dates to circa 1850-1900. It is extremely rare to find these early snake jewels and mermaid jewels dating to the Victorian period are almost impossible to find. Here we have both in one exquisite jewel. The combination of the stunning rendering of the golden snake and mermaid with the silvery white hues of the pearl create a wonderful antique jewel that is full of both drama and whimsy and the power and beauty of the natural world.
Snake jewelry is all the rage today. In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom.
Mermaids symbolize independence and individuality. Like the wild waters they make their homes in, mermaids are ever-moving and refuse to be contained. These headstrong creatures crave the freedom that the sea provides, swimming where they please, whenever they choose.
