Additional Details The present necklace is a sophisticated Victorian era gold necklace circa 1850-1880, designed as a finely carved almandine garnet snake head holding an almandine garnet heart-shaped locket which was an iconic design for this period. Additionally, This spectacular mid-Victorian snake can be styled interchangeably as a necklace or wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet The snake's eyes and nose are embelished with rose cut diamonds and there is attention to detail where the Artist engraved additional details along the mouth and profile of the the head. Additionally, the back of the heart-shaped pendant is set with a glazed miniature picture frame for its user to use as a keepsake for storage of a photo of a loved one. The necklace links themselves are styled as rounded, which makes the necklace very comfortable to wear as it is lays flexibly on the users’ neck. The necklace is further designed with a graduated three dimensional chain which size decreases as it reaches the clasp at the tail. The clasp locks by by clipping onto the side opening located at the side of the snakes head, which is intricately carved with an intertwining foliate design The mouth is open, showing teeth, and is accented with holding the loop which allows for a hanging heart-shaped red garnet pendant that is also engraved on the gold surrounding setting holding the heart shaped garnet in place as it suspends. The head and neck of the snake are carefully crafted from one singular piece of vivid red garnet which has been specifically carved and fitted to form the snakes head. Garnet Stone was very commonly incorporated in such designs because of its different level of red hues which are known for commanding attention due to the stones depths that contrast and reflect as natural light hits it. The eyes and nose are further are decorated with rose cut diamonds to provide extra style and demonstrate the intricate planning on the design firms part when creating the present snake piece. The snake motif is a famously known inspiration found in Victorian jewelry and was commonly incorporated because of its symbolic meaning for representation of eternal love, rebirth and wisdom.
