The Details...
This necklace features 3 strands of hand-knotted faux pearls. It features a central round, faceted, open back mounted orange glass stone, which is claw set and surrounded by a halo of round, colourless rhinestones. Suspended from this is a large, teardrop faux pearl detailed with a cap studded with colourless rhinestones. The necklace fastens with a box clasp and this is detailed with an oval cut orange glass stone, which is surrounded by more colourless rhinestones. The necklace measures 42cm in length.
A Short History...
This necklace is emblematic of the 'Cocktail Style' of costume jewellery being produced and worn during the late 1940s and early 1950s. In the post-war world there was a craze for costume jewellery that was ostentatious and glitzy; featuring stones in outlandish sizes and showy colourways. This form of jewellery was referred to as 'cocktail' because it was commonly worn to a way of gathering together that was becoming increasingly popular - the cocktail party.
